The Air max 1

The air max series is Nikes most iconic series of trainers consisting
of lots of different models for over 30 years. Some of the most familiar ones include the
1’s 90’s 95’s 97’s 180’s 270’s and BW(big windows). The
air max’s have an extremely deep history and today, we are going to go back
to the beginning (32 years ago) to learn how the air max’s become such a cult and
iconic shoe.

It was 1987 and Nike was in a slow part of their companies history
they needed a shoe that was going to help them survive as well as
controlling the foot wear industry. The person that is responsible for
resolving the potential dry spell and launching the air max series was Tinker Hatfield. He is one
of the most well-known Nike designers to date. Tinker Hatfield had worked for
Nike for 6 years and had started as a corporate architect, planning how
stores would look. Tinker had always wanted to design shoes, so when he
was presented with the opportunity by Nike executives, he took up the offer
immediately and started drawing.

Attempting to find inspiration, Tinker had been in Paris at the time, visiting the centre Pompidou. The structure of this building is unique as many of the integral parts are exposed on the outside including pipes and ventilation. With this in mind, Tinker then went back

to the Nike headquarters and drew up a shoe where the air element
which was previously covered was now on show. A lot of people in Nike were
very against this design, one of the reasons being that people believed that it was impractical and wouldn’t work the because shoe
would crack the bubble would be popped, resulting in a lot of returned faulty product. Fortunately for us, Tinker was confident that he was going to prove all the doubters wrong
and how accurate he was.

The air max was a real change in foot wear technology. At the time when most
of the colour ways that released for shoes where more neutral in tone as Nike thought more people would buy their shoes
if they were plain and simple, the Air Max took the risk and stirred things in this
perspective. One of the most recognisable colour ways in the sneaker spectrum includes the OG colour way that is white and red with this
big red swoosh and red “rand” (this is the red tip that runs around
the shoe).

The shoe was a massive success and the idea to show the Air inside the
shoe is now a main feature on most air max’s and the air bags keep
getting bigger and bigger with the new 720’s that debuted this year
having the tallest air bag in a trainer ever. Its hard to say what
would have happened to Nike if Tinker didn’t introduce such an iconic shoe that have enabled several to develop from this design.
One thing is for sure the Air Max 1 is a true OG and essential staple in
everyone’s wardrobe and we will continue to see new technologies and
colour ways bless this amazing shoe for many more years to come.
